I'm going junkyard scavaging this week end. Looking for some brackets and what not. Maybe I can find a junk yard jewel. Anyway, question is, I'm going to be keeping my eye out for a good set of heads for my SB 77 vette. I currently have a set of smoggers on it. Problem is, I wouldn't know a good set of heads in a juckyard if they had a neon sign over them. Can you guys give me some pointers as to what to be looking for?
I am running a set of 5.7L heads off an '89 Pickup. They're nothing special, but they have 1.94/1.50 valves and 64cc chambers. Picked them up with a fresh rebuild and Z28 springs for $200. They don't perform as well as vortec, but they worked with my existing Performer manifold after a little modifacation to the center two bolt holes on each side of the carb. They're tapped at a steeper angle than the usual xx-'85 castings, so the manifold had to be notched on these holes to accomadate. Sorry I don't have any casting #'s handy. They're a great, inexpensive way to bump compression over 76cc castings. Happy hunting!
Look for 882 casting heads..they are pre-86 style and can be modified in a lot of different ways for not a lot of money! Plus they are cheap to obtain, which is a plus in my book...
Yes, the are prone to cracking. They are fine if you leave the engine alone, however, i would port the heads , run a wild cam, or do anything to boost cylinder pressure, or run the engine reaaly really hard. That why i'm looking to replace them. I found a set of 993 for $100 that i'm picking up to replace them. :smash:
