Disadvantage: If you rev motor when oil cold and thick, you could pop a cheap filter, if you do not watch oil pressure gauge, you could starve the engine of oil in a situation where the filter got dirty.
Advantage: If you loose a cam lobe or otherwise get alot of wear particles in the oil and plug the filter, you will not bypass the dirty filter and thus trash your bearings and maybe the crank and not even know you are doing it. You will not be bypassing the filter on cold startup and getting dirty oil thru the engine.
And there was something in the documentation for the bypass filter adapter that mentioned an oil filter with a bypass valve "MUST BE USED". Is that just a disclaimer or do they actually make oil filters that have a bypass valve built in?
I've been running one of the boat motors with an adapter without a bypass (the old adapter with a bypass couldn't be removed from my old block, and the Mercrusier price for a new one is about $300). I've had a couple "oil filter shutdowns" on both motors. The plus is that without a bypass I know when the filter dies (otherwise I'd never have known there was any problems). The minus is you have to shut the motor down and come home on the other one (which still has the bypass and it's the one with the power steering pump that has to be shut down). I "think" we've finally found out what is killing filters (with only a couple hours run time on them), but I'm tired of limping home on one motor and plan to put a bypass back into the system.
The only filter I've found with a bypass built into it is the Moroso "screen" or "Oberg" type filter (Jegs has it for about $150). The System 1 filter is supposed to also, but I've heard from some people who have had the housing fail on it (which really creates a mess).
I removed the bypass valve in the filter adapter and tapped and plugged it.
I use the system 1 filter and have had no problems so far, but I try to keep the motor calm untill it warms a little.
I was told by a very knowledgeable engine builder that the filter is bypassed more often than you might think. Still, I think it's just another one of those **** things to do while your waiting for the UPS truck to bring the real important parts
the oil pressure has to be equal on both sides of the by pass valve or the oil bypasses the filter. i build all my engines without the bypass and you can tell because the oil pressure come up slowly but if you oil pressure gage shows full pressure as soon as you start your engine the by pass has opened. on boat engines i run nothing but synthetic media filter (PF-35L) because moisture in the oil swells the pores closed in the paper filter element and if you have the bypass blocked you will loss oil pressure. :chevy
Clem - The current and best guess is that the motors was reverting "just a trace" of salt water due to pinhole leaks in the old exhaust (it has $4000+ worth of new headers on it now), and the water and salt were clogging the filter. Never was enoughwwater to be detectible in the oil, but j"ust a trace" will burn off pretty quick when the oil gets hot. Since the new exhaust shouldn't let any water in (they are dry until WAY down the pipes ... and have a 2 year leak warrenty) I'm hoping the problem will go away.
I've been thinking of going to the synthetic media filter, but don't know where/what model to get one (I run the 2 quart GM style filters). Any help finding which model I'd need and where to get them?
the AC PF-35L and the mobil 1 filters are syn media. try a ac delco parts warehouse for the AC filters. when i was still building engines i bought them by the case and at that time they were $11.00 each. i have several aluminum race engines that the blocks were pourous and we got water in the oil every time you race the car and with the bypass blocked we would lose oil pressure durring the race. the PF35 L fixed that problem even thought we still got water in the oil. since i retired 8 years ago i have not bought any filters except for my personal cars and i still use syn media filters either AC UPF or mobil 1 filters. FORD engines have the bypass built into the oil filter and if you use a remote filter adapter the used a FORD filter you will have a bypass.
