Default Three Big Block Questions...

I just received my order from Jeg's the other day and can now start assembling my engine! I do have some questions though:
A) I ordered 10 degree titanium retainers for my heads. Are these a must or overkill? $133 is an awful lot to spend on something I don't need. So if I don't need them I'd just as soon send them back.

B) I received my Comp Cams 294S solid lifter cam and matching valve springs with the order. The matching valve springs are double valve springs. Can I use umbrella valve seals (would you recommend them?), or do I need to have my heads machined for teflon valve seals? Which route do I need to go?

C) Who is going to have the faster vehicle ?

The Opposition:

- 1989 S10 Pick-up (Weighs 3100lbs w/ Driver)
- TH350 Transmission w/ 3500 Stall
- 3.73 Gears & Positraction
- Lakewood Traction Bars
- 377ci Small Block De-Stroker Motor
- 10-11:1 Compression Ratio
- World Products Sportsman II Heads (2.02/1.60 Valves)
- Heads Are Gasket Matched w/ Valve Job
- 296 Solid Lifter Cam (108 Lobe Seperation)
- Forged Rotating Assembly
- Weiand Stealth Intake w/ 750 Dominator
- M/T ET Streets (28-13.5-15s On 10" Rims)
- Open Header Exhaust Into 2.5" Exhaust Pipe

My Setup:

- 1976 Corvette Stingray (3650lbs w/ Driver)
- Borg Warner Super T10 4 Speed
- 3.36 Gears & Positraction
- 468 Big Block (454 + .060")
- 10.5-11:1 Compression Ratio
- "206" Closed Chamber Heads (2.19/1.88 Valves)
- Heads Gasket Matched, Bowls Blended (Came off a 454 Camaro running 10.90s in the 1/4)
- Comp Cams 294S Solid Lifter Cam (.595" Lift, 110 Lobe Seperation)
- Forged Rods, Pistons & Cast Crank
- Torker II Intake (Gasket Matched)
- Holley 850cfm Double Pumper
- Mickey Thompson 28-11.5-15s
- Open Hooker Header Side Pipes (2" Primaries Into 4" Collectors)

Something to keep in mind. I will be changing to a Tremec TKO 5 speed in the near future (3.27:1 1st Gear) but will be keeping the 3.36 rear end which will give me a 10.98 effective first gear. I know my engine is putting out more power than his but my two major problems will be:

1. My Car Being Nearly 600lbs More Than His
2. Hooking Up With The Standard Transmission

Any recommendations? I do have a TH400 out of a '73 Corvette that I could use, but I would have to cut my crossmember so it would be removable (do not want to do) and I really want a stick. So what do you think?

As for 1/4 mile times a lot of that will be the driver. I think you would blow him away in the typical street race, from a roll. The Tremec will help your cause a lot :chevy

A=overkill-forged steel locks
B=machine for PC seals-the id of the springs will pull the umbrella seal up
C=truck-will leave hard on you and will never catch him

Your putting way to much time and effort into trying to beat this truck. You will have a very strong car with the motor you are building. A lot depends on the driver and hooking it up. Build the car for how you want it and don't worry about this truck. He will still be driving a S10 truck while you have a Corvette.

I know, I know....he is just soooo cocky and I want to beat him soooo badly. Judging by the majority of replys I probably won't race him, I don't want to give him the satisfaction of beating me :). You are right though I shouldn't be so worried about it, but I am...:(

Bence,
It is just the fact he has a fairly good motor,hi stall with automatic and slicks. No driving to that.Floor it and he will go.Hell,my wife could drive the truck. The deal is he wants to be a Dragon Slayer.Don't let him.Make him go fronm a 30 mph roll.I would say you would suck him down your carb then but thats impossible cause you will be ahead of him!

That intake manifold is going to kill serious H.P. on you; probably well over 50 H.P., compared to the typical hi-rise on that size motor. You're much better off with a single 850 annular speed demon 4bbl. dual plane hi-rise, IMHO.
I know, where's mine? The quads cost me some on upper end, but they sure are azz-kickin' GREAT on low and mid-range! And, I'm not a racer........

He doesn't have very good heads, if he doesn't have lots of head work he isn't making over 500hp. Challenge him to race on the street and the track. :smash:

Bence, you are going to get beaten on a regular basis if you run a stick against a high stall auto car. That's a fact. If you want to win drag races you need that TH400.

You also need to dump that Torker II and get an Air Gap RPM manifold and L88 hood.

You are heading down the road of mismatched parts otherwise.

Cam:
Yea, I've come to understand that I am going to lose...but I'm not getting rid of the manual transmission. I'm building this car to have fun with, I enjoy shifting the gears and working the clutch. I think if I were to go with a higher intake I would probably go with the Holley Strip Dominator. For now I think I'm going to get the engine together with what I have so I can get it on the road and start enjoying it (I've been waiting for about 9 months now!). Thanks for all the input guys.
