Here is the situation. I have 4k to spend on my stock 73 L48. This price includes removal and installation, incidentals, etc.
Should I rebuild, and if so with what mods...
or buy which crate engine?
Someone needs to make up my mind for me. I have a local shop I trust to do the rebuild. I am only moderately concerned about keeping the # matching. Help me out.
Depends on what you want - are there any crate engines that meet your power/torque goals? Do you want a basic stock rebuild/performance, or are you looking for high-performance - if so, what numbers do you have in mind?
Removing and installing the motor yourself will save you as much as $1000, based on average shop rates and quotes I've seen people posted. You can pull a motor in less than a day.
Also another thing to think about if you have the orginal motor sitting on the side, you can always dop it back in when you want to sell. Then run the new motor as hard as you like.
Im hoping to gain some power...from what i research i have done i can get about 100 more hp on a rebuild that would cost 4k with everything accounted for. zz4 motor is about 3300 plus install puts me right at about 4k and similar hp.
What i am looking for is if anyone has specific mods that they would recomend for my engine. I am a novice so i am trusting the shop (i have good refs. from forum members) that the items they are planning to change make sense. they are talking about changing heads/cam/carb...would like specific info on which brands/models are recomended.
Regardless of which way you decide to go, remember to leave about $500.00 set aside for the " Do I really need a new one of those?" fund. Another $500.00 for the "Oh $h*t" fund isn't a bad idea either.
Don't think the government is the only one who goes over budget.
