Tips, techniques...please help. When I get back to school next week, I will be starting the reassembly of my heads. They had a three-angle valve job, cleaned valves/heads, hardened seats, and bronze guides done. I'm new to this, so your suggestions on how to do it would help.
I don't know how to post a reference to a post but look under C3 creater norvalwilhelm. It is there under assembling a cylinder head.
Good luck and I would be glad to help if you e mailed me.
OK. I found that post, and it confused me. I'm reassembling everything that came off without a cam swap. I've alread got .060 shims under the springs.
Valves will be going back in as opposed to new valves unless there is some problem. Is there a way to tell a "bad" valve after the machine shop is done? They said all the valves looked good.
When you buy a new cam it comes with a card that gives the spring specs, installed height. You are to install the proper springs at this height. If the springs are installed too long the pressure will not be there and if too short the pressure could be too high or the clearance between the retainer and valve seal might be too little and a collision between the two will result in a wiped lobe or dropped valve.
Just putting thinks back together after a valve job is not good enough. Check installed heights and make it right. Valve springs must also be compressed and spot checked to prevent coil bind. If you know what you are doing it is easily done in an evening and you know nothing will bind.
Don't just blindly throw springs in, valve seals and hope. Prove to yourself that there is enough clearance and everything is installed properly.
Cam cards are there to help, follow them.
