ok, i got beat by an lt1 camaro, need some mo go! here's what i got: 85 vette auto w/shift kit and ~2500 rpm stall, ported and siamesed intake, hedman long tube headers(on order)w/out smog. What size cam should I use? This car will be a daily driver, so I want to be able to drive it in traffic, highway, etc. oh yeah i think the altitude here is 4300 ft. above S.L. if that makes a diff. I do have the stock iron heads 76 cc i think, but i will eventually switch over to vortechs or similar soon. Any takers???
ok TPIS lists the zz-9 as a roller. Mine's and 85, so flat tappet for me. when i build the 400 it will be a roller. But thats later. summit has a cam with these specs...dur @.050=224in 234ex--lift=465in 488ex---lobe sep=114 and a good price at ~72 bucks for cam and lifters. How about this one with my setup???
I will agree with TNTcorvette on this . I would not do the cam change alone.
Invest in the AFR190 heads or maybe some edlebrooks.
The 85 is nice in that you can boost up your compression fairly easily with heads. Your 85 vette has 76 cc heads with flattop pistons. Going wiht somthing in the mid 66cc range will put you over 10:1 comp.
I ran the 74219 LPE cam in my 85 350. I loved it . I did also have throuraly ported edlebrooks and the superram.
Stick in that range and you can get by with your factory 24lb bosch injectors.
I have not heard many good stories of guys getting good programming results when switch to bigger injectors. 85(870) ecm.
One extra note to take is if you do want to swap to the zz-9 or 74219 cams. These are hydrolic rollers. They will require retro-fit roller lifters.
I CANNOT afford afr, edelbrocks or any other 1200-22,000 dollar heads. Let alone a superrram, and dfi setup, which are another 3000 bucks?! I need more cam with what I am running NOW! yes, i am going to take my time and build my 400 up right, forged, roller, lt1/4 intake, speed density, etc. But thats not for another 2yrs proly. I would like to do something fairly simple to gain some more power right now. I already opened up the intake(man), exhaust is on the way, now I would like to put a cam in so I wont be the slowest damn vette in town. I'm not looking for a 10 second car. in the 13's will suffice until i get the other work done on the car so i can start on the 400 build up. ANYONE out there that can help??!?!?!?
Ok, LPE lists a 74212(dur=214/224,lift=443/465,CL=112) and 74213(224/234,465/488,112) previous sugg to use with tpi, the latter with superram. cant find any performance figures on these, though.......anybody using or have used these cams in the past????
The 85 uses the same crap heads that came on my 84 (casting no 624). You can do a little porting on them, but be carefull! These things are pretty thin! If you want to stick with the stock ecm programing something in the 204-210 intake 212-216 exhaust duration range with a 112 or bigger LCA is just about a must. If you are going to burn your own chips, do what you want, just don't go to big because those heads and the TPI intake are designed for low end torque and if you go big your engine will not be matched up well (aka-less power than you have now). I would think that you would be plesantly supprised with something in the range I mentioned before. I am running a crane 2030 compucam (PAW and Summit have house grinds with the same specs) that I am running with some 1.6 RRs. The specs on my cam are 204/214 duration and 110 LCA. I replaced the intake and the heads at the same time but have a buddy that just did the cam and really noticed a difference. The 84 and the 85 have the same cam, too. The only difference is the TPI/Cross-fire (don't knock the cross-fire, mine is pretty fast!). Hope this helps.
