I am looking for a cam with 210* intake duration at .050, and 224* exhaust duration at .050, with lift around .430, and .460 int/exh respectively. I think this will be a good cam for my setup, and I haven't found it yet. I know that I can get custom grinds, but I am afraid to ask the price. If anyone knows where I can get a cam like this, or how much it would be to custom grind one, any help would be appreciated.
I know there will be questions, so: Some things about the car are my secret, but my trans is a manual with overdrive, the gears are "4 something :)". My compression is "around 9.0." I have done a lot of talking to people and some reading (though I am a little aprehensive about printed word, but when I talk or correspond to someone, I can determine if they know what is up, and so I can trust/not trust them) research on the heads and the other components, and I want to keep my redline around 5500. The highest I will likely pull it to, other than in a real race, would be around 5000. I have concluded that this would be about the best cam profile for my particular application. If anyone knows the cost of a custom cam, I would maybe be interested in that. If it is to expensive, I will just pick a comp or lunati that is close to that. Some people may think I am crazy, but I think this will work for my application.
Nothing is really secret I guess, but I just dont tell everyone everything they dont need to know. Nothing against anyone, but if I was driving a monster 434 ci Twin turbo, or a 305 mini mouse, and someone asked what was in it, I would say the same: small block. Just personal thing that I think I learned growing up around racetracks, what is in my car, is in my car, and it really doesnt matter to anyone else, unless they are going to buy it. Dont take this the wrong way, but this is just how I am. I don't reveal anything extra. If there is anything else anyone needs/wants to know to help me out, fine. Otherwise, I just like having secrets i guess.
I don't think it costs alot more to have a custom grind (but I don't know for sure). I would think that it would take a while to get it though. Why don't you phone comp cams 1-800 number and ask?
Maybe I'm a little cynical, or maybe I've been up too long today and am a little grumpy.
You didn't say if you want solid, hyd. hyd roller solid roller or what.
1) Custom roller cams can be had from just about all the cam co's for around $300.
2) Flat tappets.. geez... you can get anything you want for a small block. It's on the shelf somewhere already.
3) 210/224*??? Pretty small for a car with "4 something gears". Must not be planning on going too fast or you're going to hit OD during a run. Do some math about what rpm you will need with your tire size. You'll run out of rpm before you get to the end of a 1/4. It'll get there but be way down on the power curve.
4) Secret??? Geeeeezzz..... C'mon... how many secret combos of a 9.0 compression 5500 rpm small block are left to be discovered?
5) This is a Forum... means a nice place to EXCHANGE info. I get lots of help here and try to give others as much as I can or send them to someone who can.
6) We're not top secret NASCAR racing here. And street racing secrecy don't matter. I've done it for years and whatever someone brings to the game we play with. I love it when folks get all secretive about their combo. There ain't that much rocket science to this stuff. At the track or the street, it's pure king of the hill. If you get beat, it don't matter what your combo is, it wasn't enough.
Sorry, if I'm taking you out of context, but at least try to be courteous to the folks you're asking for help from. It goes a long way.
I just had Lunati custom grind a cam for me with 215/224 .489/.489 lift on a 112 lobe center installed at 108 centerline. great cam up to 5600 rpms with stock exhaust manifolds :yesnod: cost me $325
Thanks for all the responses, guys, I have my answer on the cam I am running. The custom is not practical for my budget, I could set up a roller for less, so the good people at Crower helped me pick out the right cam.
