Default [Suggestion]: What Head Gaskets

Just looking for a quick recommendation on head gaskets.

I currently have a pair of Felpro 1094s that I was going to use, but FelPro supposedly says that they will not hold up to over 10.5:1 compression which is right about there these would put me.

The engine is your standard '87 Aluminum Head 9.5:1 L98 with a set of D-Port Aluminum L98 heads going onto it. The block is clean and has not been touched since it left the factory.

So, I need a nice reliable head gasket for use with the Aluminum heads.

Suggestions? :)

I just put a set of these Aluminum heads that had been worked on my 79 and the gasket recommended for my application by various members of the forum for my 10.8:1 compression flat top piston motor was the Felpro 1010. So far no problems.

Good Luck

1094, I'm sorry I reversed it.

Scopr, what minimum deck height are you shooting for? I've read that .040" is min and again that .029" is min. It depends on piston material & configuration as well as valve train setup.

Anyway, that's the real concern in gasket choice, enough clearance when hot to clear the valves as well as the head.

Minimize quench/swirl while doing no damage to maximize CR and reduce octane sensitivity.

Scorp, I used a set of victor reinz gaskets I got from LPE. They are .029 compressed thickness. This is what they use all the time on their stuff, I figure they know what theyre doin. You can order them over the phone.

As for quench height I had my heads cut .010 and used the above gaskets rather than the thicker .39 compressed thickness stock gasket. It may have been good for a small bump in cr and hp. Another benefit of reducing quench is you can run more timing. There was a great thread on quench area in the engine mods section about a month or two ago. See if you can find it. Lots of great info in it.

I've had good luck with the 1010's on both my vette with Edelbrock heads and my blown Jeep with AFR heads.

Scrop, since you're not doing pistons or block, maybe you could use the TPIS standard 350 head gasket #700-306 @$39/pair. It has a thickness of .029" and raises compression by 1/2 pt and reduces quench area for a 10hp gain.

this is the best i could come up with for my rig:

Victor 5746....026 compressed; good to 14:1, no overlap into cylinders; good for Alum heads.

scorp
i block sanded the heads on my 72, to use with .015 shim hg,
they need a smooth surface, if you spend 1/2 hour each block sanding with 400, you will have a much better chance of success.
on my 61 i used the 1010, that was before i understood the above.

Hey that's my topic on quench!

An update:

11.2:1 compression ratio (possibly higher, since they are 64cc heads, decked .010) with 91 octane gas...drumroll please...

No detectable detonation...gaskets seem to be sealing just fine. I wound up with a .015 Fel-Pro and .028 deck height...giving a .043 quench height. Don't remember the Fel-Pro numbers though...but they are steel shim rubber coated, and I smeared them with Blue goop (very thin layer) before installing. No problems at 450 miles...

Oh, and I didn't smooth my block/heads...they were already pretty nice.
