I've already posted this in the C-3 section, but I thought that I'd try it over here were some of you C-4 guys hang out.
I've got a buddy with a 79 and true duals, no cat. He is installing headers and a new exhaust to his system and wants to put in a H-Pipe or X-Pipe. We have both heard that to get maximum benefit the crossover pipe needs to be a certain distance back from the header collectors. Is there a formula that determines the best place to put the crossover?
It looks like the only place that truly has the room is behind the crossmember. Where have you guys with them put yours?
Thanks
Yes, but in any practical chassis, the answer winds up being, "You can't get it close enough to be ideal, so put it as close to the collectors as you can."
On my '67, they barely got the thing in there at all (X pipe). Yes, mine is behind the cross-member. Works great, and sounds great. Really smooths out the exhaust note at higher RPM.
X pipe is way better than H pipe for balancing flow downstream of the crossover. It presents no barrier for the exhaust pulse to split between the pipes. The sudden apparent increase in diameter creates a scavenging pulse going back up both pipes. Read about it at http://www.drgas.com, but save a ton of money by getting an X fabricated at the exhaust shop. Bring them a picture if you don't think they've made them before. Actually quite easy to make out of a few mandrel bends, for a guy with a bandsaw and a welder.
I agree with Wayne. Get the X . On my 1970 BB, its right behind the cross member. It was a good investment. Got mine from Jegs - came with some 45 degree pipes . A good muffler shop can do the job. Got mine done at Midas Muffler and the guy welded everything and aligned everything very well. I even had the exhaust tips punched out from 2 inch to 2.5 inch, so , now the entire exhaust system its 2.5 inch . Made the throttle response better, bit more of a growl at idle and low rpms, and much quieter at rpms over 2500. Nice on a long trip with the radio on .
