Two options for my L-88 replica, a LS3/550hp or a 496/650hp.
Still have a few months before the final decision but does anyone run a 496 from Vortec Pro or any other vender? Is it worth the extra weight for 100hp? Thanks

Head over to the Chevelle forums and search for Vortecpro. Lots of guys running his stuff. One in particular a 71/72 Vette done up to look like a stocker. He's got it in the 10's on drag radials!! His screen name is Shouldntbehere. No complaints I've seen. Hope this helps

You'd be happier with the LS3. I have a head and cam design that makes 600 streetable hp at the flywheel and runs 10:80s in a 3800 lb El Camino. The nose weight with a BBC would ruin the cornering of your ride.(unless it was all aluminum) But what I really would suggest is to use the LS7 ZO6 engine. I've been building those for some time now and can make 700 to 740hp all day long with my head work and cam package on 91 octane. Any questions contact Ed at 928-458-7733

My brother has one of his 468 BBC and he chose the 500hp motor and it came out 512hp/555ftlbs and has run perfect.

I would have went BBC if you were really going for a replica. Not that th LS is bad as much as it makes the car more of a corvette with an L88 hood vs a replica. FWIW, Mark builds an outstanding product that provides even more outstanding results.

If you ever change your mind he builds great engines. There are about 3 locals in my area that have them. One makes around 800hp with a 468 using AFR 305's another makes the same power but stupid tq on pump gas with a 572. Add extra expense for new underwear to your drawback of BBC list.

If ou havnt bought an engine yet, check out Ultrastreet.net. Shafiroff is a good engine builder with a lot of selections. He has an all aluminum 540 big block which might be the best of both worlds. It shaves 200lbs off of a standard big block. They are building my 427 small block and are a great bunch of guys.

Naysayers need to take a good look at what Vortecpro builds

Is it worth the extra weight for 100hp
Yep.

That 10 sec Vette only runs a juicer cam in the 230s very very good manners. There is nothing like stupid huge BB torque all thorughout the band. Wont get that with the LSx. Peak hp we all know what the LSx can do

100-200 lbs youll probably never feel anyway unless youre on a roadcourse and how many really do that?!
