Default 4L80-E in a C3

Searched the archives without success, so I'll ask.

Several months ago someone installed a 4L80-E in a C3 and as I remember had to cut off one of the ears. So I don't have to re-invent the wheel, anyone remember which side was cut off. Or, better yet, do you have a link to the original post?

The ear on the left side of the "bell" has to be removed. I have a 4L80E in my '82, so it might have been one of my posts that you are referring to. I have some pics on my website...

Aside from the physical modifications needed to install the tranny, what did you guys do about the electronic portion of the swap. I'm told those trannys are computer controled. I have a 69 Camaro in desperate need of an overdrive and of course it's carburated. I also have a 4L60E that is supposed to be similar to the 4L80E that I would like to install in the car.

I'm using the TCI/FAST T-Com programmable controller ($720 from Jeg's), it'll work on either a 4L60E or 4L80E. The 4L80E is much stronger than the 4L60E and has different gear ratio's, other than them both being automatic 4 speeds with OD, that where the similarities end.

I'm getting ready to drop in an LT1 and 4L60E into my 84 C4 - to answer your question, I will be using an OBDI PCM and full wiring harness from the donor vehicle (96 Z28), and LT1 Edit to account for the tuning.

Eventually I may switch to a more tuner-freindly system such as DFI, etc. but the LT1 will remain a virgin until at least next year.

Apart from the wiring, board members have told me that I will have to acquire a transmission tail shaft housing from a 4L60E Corvette to properly instally the Z28 4L60E into my 84 (currently with 700R4). Does anyone know if I can just reuse the tail shaft housing currently in the car???
