Front Blower Drive - getting silly ?
After looking at Monty's "crowded" (but beautiful) engine compartment with the twin turbos and wondering if I could find something more interesting than the "run of the mill" single block EFI setup ... was wondering last night about plumbing a front mount 6-71 blower to a custom FI manifold. Maybe use one of the Stealth-Ram bases with a custom plenum and twin throttle bodies. With the motor set-back I could probably stick one in. Anyone seen one recently or know if they even still exist? I've never seen one close enough to know how they mount to the motor (or do they mount to the chassis).
Or should I just put on the funny jacket with the extra long arms and go back to sleep :)

Actually, I think I know what you are talking about. Mounting the 6/8/14-71 blower in front of the engine, and have some tubes run up and into the intake?
There was an older/vintage dragster that had this set up. I want say it had something to do with moon/mooneye's stuff. It, or a copy is sitting in a PAW shop in the next town over from me.
I am looking for pics right now...

Yep, that's the setup I remember. Wonder if any of those drive adapter housings still exist.

Wow, that's pretty cool looking. I have never seen that before.
Seems like a centrifugal or Whipple supercharger would be easier to package though. It looks like you'd have to set the engine back a couple of feet to get that front mount roots SC to fit?

The one in the photo looks to me like a 14-71? A 6-71 isnt that long, shorter than a SBC block. A 4-71 at modest boost would be even shorter. And I do probably have close to 2 feet to work with, the motor is back about 10" behind the cross member, and the radiator has been moved forward and down.
Possible ? Don't know. May have to ask my brother to hit the Pomona swap meet a couple of times this summer and see if anything shows up.

Wow, they should have gone really wild and stuck another roots on the intake with a huge intercooler inbetween the two. :crazy:
Hmm, or was it done this way to prevent detonation/reversion from blowing up the blower?

Yep, the blower Bentlies were probably the first to do that. Any relation to the Cunningham who ran at Lemans? Went to his musieum in So Cal years ago, lots of nice cars. Can't remember the curator's name, but he was a welath of info and lots of fun to talk with.

BTW Peter Cunningham in running the Speed WC
and the family is coming out with a new street car.
Back to the subject, MG made a little "Poor Man's" version of the car.
Same setup, sticking out the front radiator grill.
And Mercedes did a version with a clutch, so it could be turned on when good gasoline, kinda rare back then was available.

Greg,wouldn't a VORTEC style blower be easier to mount and to plumb with just as good results?.....not an expert talking,just an enthusiastic amateur...john :cheers: :chevy

defnitely easier to install, less weight as well.
Roots blower have a nice linear output, as well as a lower initial cost.
If I went for a custom blower setup, I'd go with a latham screw type blower.
Far more efficient compressor.
but a Roots definitely has a :cool: factor about it :D
