If it's metal, polish it?
Here's how the headers turned out, before and after. Thanks to everyone who offered me advice on the best/easiest way to polish this stuff.
I spent the last couple of hours polishing the compressor housing too:

I noticed you have a Lincoln 175 square wave tig welder. How well does it work? I was just looking at one at a welding shop the other day. To pay someone to do a mandrel bend exhaust would probably pay for at least half of the cost of the welder. If you do it yourself, you get exactly what you want. So I think I may buy one and build my own exhaust system.
I disappear from the forum a couple of months, and look what happens... you go and follow Merlin into the realm of insane HP!!
You told me to stop by when you get it done, so you could give me a ride...
I think I might have to pass on that one, that much power scares me.
But, all joking aside, I am envious of what you have accomplished, and think you should be very proud of yourself for the shine job you've done.
Later,
Rob
74vetteman, I love the welder. It's my first welder and I hadn't ever really welded before I bought it, so I pretty much taught myself. It's a pretty good welder for a gime garage, although the TIG 255 Pro adds alot of nce features for welding aluminum like manually adjustable EN and EP. But the 175 Pro is more than capable, I used it to finsih up alot of the welds on the headers. It'll pretty much weld about anyhting you'd need to do car related, up to 3/8" steel or stainless and about 1/4" aluminum - so it's too small to repair cylinder heads, but just about anything else is within it's range, certainly any exhaust or tubular fabrication.
Rob, You're always welcome to stop by anytime. The block and crank shoule be done by next weekend, and dyno testing/tuning is scheduled for the first weekend in June. So I hoipe to be back on the road my mid-June.
Flareside, The 321 stainless should be less prone to turning gold like 304, due to it's titanium content, but I'm sure it will to some extent. I used a propane torch on a pice of scrap to see if it discolored and it got a faint golden hue, but easily polished right back to "chrome" with some metal polish. I don't really know for sure though... The guy that did most of the finish welding used to work at Vance and Hines (motorcycle mufflers and exhausts) and he makes beautiful welds. I can only hope to get that good.
