Stock heads won't flow much. I have an XE256 in mine (auto) but ported the heads & bigger valves, exhaust etc. With a 4 speed you could go to a 268H with a 4 speed but depends on rear gears and what you want out of it.
I'm sure others with more knowledge than I will chime in.
Like Chis said, we need to know more about your car, how you use it, and your goals. Hotter cams move the power band up and you can reach a point where it's too high for normal street use. As you go bigger, drivability will go down so don't get carried away. If you go for the mildest cam you can find, you won't gain enough power to justify the swap.
hey guys.. I'd like to have something close to ZZ4/Lt1 power (i know im pushin it). Im considering the 268H, but it seems most who go this route regret it, and want something bigger. but.. I still want the car to be drivable. With the erson 1.5 roller rockers, will the 268 be enough?
I'll also be adding a 100-150 shot of nitrous. I'm tryin to get the most out of what I have.
btw heres what i have In the parts room (kitchen)... 1.5 erson roller rockers and pushrods, flow tech headers, edel. performer (not the rpm), and the Gm 186 heads w/ some polishing they flow up there with some good after market heads (from what i hear).
The 268H will be a noticable improvement over a stock L48 cam but probably only a slight improvement over a stock L82 cam. If you're retaining the converter (s), a dual pattern cam like the XE262 (or a similar grind from one of the other mfg's) might be better. Unless you go to a larger cam than those, drivability probably won't suffer enough to be an issue.
XE262 has modern, more aggressive ramps compared to the older design of 268HE. XE262 also offers a bit more lift that 268HE. So the XE262 is a step up from the 268HE. If you want to boost the cam lift and duration just a bit more, you might want to try 1.6 rockers instead of 1.5 rockers. It´s always easier to swap rockers than a cam.
Check the actual cam specs from Comp Cams webpages, and you´ll see the numbers yourself.
