Default Old School Help

Hey Guys-

In addition to my 06 Z06, I picked up a nice cruiser a few weeks back ( 64 Chevy II).

This is my first step into the classic/carbed world, and I have lots to learn. I am hoping you guys can lend some knowledge around next steps for the motor. I'll outline the current configuration below.

Current Combo:

1965 block (327ci)
unsure of compression
Vortec Heads
Comp 268 Cam (lift is only 477/480 I believe)
E-Brock Performer Intake
E-brock 650 Carb
Bowtie Stage 2 700r4 with 2200 stall and 373 gears out back

I am looking for an honest 400hp at the motor, so do I attempt to do this with the 327, or scrap it and build something else (350/383)? The motor is solid (-10k miles on it), but just doesn't have enough power for me. My thoughts are maybe a good set of 2.02/1.60 aluminum heads, RPM intake and bigger cam? Thoughts on possible combos are appreciated.

Go to pro-touring.com and lateral-g.net and you can get all the advice you need, to make a great car. You may want to do lots of other things prior to tearing into a relatively new engine. Steering, brakes and suspension to name a few. AFR, Trick Flow, Brodix or Dart heads are pricey, $1000 and up. New heads and cam should get you near your 400hp goal.

I personally would do rack and pinion, hydroboost and disc brake conversions first. Making it safer before making it faster is my logic. I am custom building a C2 Coupe and get a lot of good ideas on the above mentioned websites. Very nice looking car!!!

Nice looking Chevy II! Well 327 are good little motors, but they do much better with 4.56 and more cam. My advice if you want to keep the Bowtie Stage 2 700r4 with 2200 stall and 373 gears go to a 383. Something similar to a ZZ 383 would probably scoot alone nicely in a light weight Chevy II.

With your current driveline, I would think about stroking the crank, ~10.5:1 pistons, semi mild Hyd roller cam, good set of 2.02 1.68 alum heads, high rise intake, headers, dbl pumper carb.

"honest" 400hp is somewhat arbitrary. A goal of 400ft/lbs at ~3500 rpm will give you honest, seat-of-the-pants fun factor, regardless of HP

Nice shoebox!!

If I can help you out shoot me a pm
You can reach 400 easy on that 327

I honestly think 400 at the crank wont be enough for you that will put you maybe in the low 3s to the ground. You need torque, lots of it.
Youre spoiled by that C6! There is a solution though.
