Hello..75 corvette with 79 350 and a turbo 400...the trans is slipping in drive or third gear....just started..but car sat for two yearsbefore I could finish putting back together...there is a plug on the driver side of trans...passing gear kick-down I think it's called...it's not connected to any thing...just a red wire coming from the plug on the trans...does this have anything to do with trans slipping in drive...if not what are there any suggestions...like maybe fluid and filter change...HELP...Thanx, Jack
How does reverse feel? Does it shift good and solid and at the right times for the other gears or does it seem sloppy? Any idea of history of trans? A modulator messed up can make it real sloppy feeling overall..but not just 3rd gear.
Sadly, there's not much external that you can do that will only affect 3rd gear. Leaving the kickdown unhooked won't do mess it up. There's no band adjustments like on other trans.
You can drop the pan to see what's in there...but again...not a whole lot you can do.
Are you sure it's full of fluid? It's possible the filter is plugged up (but again...gotta figure out what plugged it). I have seen some of the cheap filters come apart and wad up internally and restrict fluid. Usually the filters where you CAN'T see the media when you look into the inlet did better for me.
if fluid has never been changed or has not been for a very long time, do not change it. changing old trans fluid for an auto trans may cause slipping between gears. reason for this is because the internals of the trans wear out and go mix into the fluid. so the old fluid acts as friction for the gears to grab better. i hope that horrible explanation makes sense. if you already changed the fluids and you are having this problem, this is probably why. good luck!
