I always check myself with the wheel. I've caught myself off a tooth once or twice. :cry

It is not necessary to degree a new cam and I think most are installed without ever being degreed. I ALWAYS degree to assure myself everything is right. I have never found a problem but I want to know when I button the motor up it is right and I will not be doing it over.
If you are unfamiliar with degreeing just be sure to install the timming marks correctly and you will be fine.

I agree with Norval. In 30 years I have not found a cam to be different from the card. But I still check every one. If you want to buy a wheel, dial indicator, base, solid lifter and TDC stop just to have in your tool box, go for it, but you probably don't need it,

Ditto: I never found a cam to be off the specs. I do like to find TDC and install the harmonic balance and verify the TDC mark on it. They do vary sometimes.

Just to give my experiences, many years ago I found two (2) new Cloyes gear sets with one of the dots punched one tooth off!

These were both Big block buildups and degreeing is was caught them. Cloyes was 'shocked' when I called them about it.

Just to keep things in perspective, I recently received a new set of Speed Pro Plasma Moly +.005 rings for the 434 I'm building for Steve. The oil ring set was for a .060 over engine bore instead of the .030 over bore I was dealing with. The top and second rings were correct, but the oil ring set was for a larger bore engine EVEN THOUGH THE BOX THE OIL RING SET CAME IN WAS MARKED CORRECTLY AS BEING FOR A .030 OVER ENGINE.

I always do a trial fit of rings in the bore before I begin gapping and installing them and the oil ring rails and expander would not fit without over-lapping. THEY WOULD NOT EVEN GO ON THE PISTONS WITHOUT OVER-LAPPING THE ENDS.

After finding the problem and caling HTC in CA, Hank called Speed Pro and when they checked their inventory they found many other sets also MIS BOXED!!!!!!!!!

You've gotta check or you won't know what you have.
