I was reading the forums on Supercars.net and this guy posted this...
Instead of buying that expensive $2K short block, why not start with a Goodwrench 350 deluxe long block (block, heads, internals, cam, valve covers, oil pan), pick up one for $1289.95. Try a low-priced 383 stroker from Speed-O-Motive for $460. Couple this with a $449 set of GM Vortec heads, and yeild a friendly 9.3:1 compression ratio. Next, try a Crane hydraulic roller camshaft with .431" lift at $134.95. Add on top, a great high-rise dual-plane Z/28 intake for $139.95. Top it off with a new 670 cfm Holley Street Avenger carb ($359.95), a 14" low-profile air cleaner ($19.95), and a high-performance HEI distributor ($189.95), and there you go. Total price: $3,043.70
Speed-O-Motive used to be one of the best places to buy stroker kits. It's been around since the 1940s and that's how it made its bones.
However, I've heard lots of bad things from several sources over the past couple of years or so about Speed-O-Motive. Seems things may have become more, uh..profit-oriented after a possible ownership change. (Offshore parts, high volume, high pressure, sell, sell, sell.)
I'm not slamming them because I don't have any personal experience. Just filling you in. There are other places to get stroker cranks. Like maybe Scat or Eagle?

Alright, thanks, I will think about this option...
I just finished the bottom end on mine, I put in the scat crank, Dart heads, crane cam extreme and new pistons, actually other than the block everything is new. Will update you next week when top end assembled and block is in.
This months Car Craft does a 383 buildup. The end result is 540 hp and over 500 tq. Their cost was 4400 I believe. 383 shortblock w/AFR heads, solid roller cam. I don't recall how many forged parts were included to make things hold up.
I don't understand the logic of buying a long block engine and then replacing almost all of it's components except for the block. Why not just buy the SpeedoMotive 383 short block for $1400 and add the other components mentioned? That guy didn't include the cost of the roller lifters but, at that price and wimpy lift, I don't think he's taliking about a roller cam anyway (but probably thinks he is).
check out http://www.allchevyengines.com i got my 383 for $4000.00.(minus carb, intake, oil pan, fuel pressure reg, ect) i only have 350 miles on it so far but everything seems great. :D the engine i have has all quality parts that if i was to build it myself it would cost much more. :yesnod: good luck!
blue_stingray - has a closer figure for a performance motor. Maybe even low because a raw borable higher quality 3970100 four bolt still needs $500 + in machining (bore & hone) (rod clearancing) (blue print block for studs)
A smart person would not build a 383! go for 396 with the 3.875 stroke
He also left off the roller cam button timing cover.
