Default Need your ignition opinions.

The final piece to my new engine build-up is a pointless ignition system. My question is which one should I go with, I have looked at the Pertronix and I see many ppl using the MSD. This has to be purchased fairly soon and I am desperate for your comments by those of you who are using pointless systems. Are some better than others, and reliability is of course important along with hp/tq output.

The MSD is really the way to go. I used the Pertronix on a BMW 2002 Tii and it was very good. I have the MSD billet distributor with the MSD 6-AL on my 600 HP GT-1 car and it is faultless. The key factor here is to mount the MSD in a place that stays relativity cool.

I have seen a thread where members are going back to points, go figure! I have had Mallory unilight and coil for years. I am very happy. The MSD is expensive but good. It is hard to beat stk HEI for the money. How much CR and rpms do you plan to run? Big CR and rpms need extra spark. Personally, I would spend the money elsewhere.

I remember reading that post as well but couldn't find it. Will try my current points and Echlin coil see how that does, if she craps out on the dyno testing I will be doing to tune everything up, I will put an electronic ignition to see how it works and reply back again just not sure Pertronix or MSD

I would also use the MSD. They offer technical support and build great equipment.
You can reach their customer support dept. @ 915-855-7123 they will also answer your questions @ msdtech@ msdignition.com.

Tell them what you have and where you want to go and they will give you honest info to provide educated guidance.

Not sure which Pertronix (?) piece you are asking about. They make mag pickups (with a built in ignition module) that fit inside an old-style distrib, and it does away with the points. I used one on an old big-block for a couple of years, and it ran fine.

<BTW, the kit I bought didn't fit for snot - I had to do a bunch of machining on the parts they sent to make them fit together where they were supposed to go - except for that(!) no problemo.>

However the old distrib was pretty worn out - I later replaced it with an MSD billet piece, that just had the mag pickup/reluctor inside. I ran that out to a GM 4-pin module (mounted externally) and then to a coil. That works too.

The MSD distrib is a beautiful thing, but picey. A GM HEI in good condition works just as well.
