Which BB flywheel should I get?
Well, Im resigned to getting a new flywheel in order to balance my rotating assembly. I bought the 454 with a flexplate attached so a new flywheel was in order anyway. My question is which flywheel do I need?
Here's the correct 454 ext balanced flywheel from GM:
3993827 - Flywheel (454ci) 1970-90 $165.74
This counterweighted 14" diameter flywheel for manual transmission applications provides the correct engine balance for externally balanced 454ci big-blocks. It is drilled for an 11" diameter clutch. Flywheel ID #3993457.
Technical Notes: Do not use with internally balanced engines. Use with counterweighted balancer P/N 3963530. 168 tooth starter ring gear. For use with Mark IV engine only.
And then I read on the forum here about an aluminum flywheel???
I'm using a stock cast crank and stock 8in 454 balancer. Any other choices?
Re: Which BB flywheel should I get? (1970 Stingray)
I run the original 30lb nodular iron flywheel in my 71 454. I would think the GM fly wheel would be fine for a street driver. Now if your going to the track and you have a 4.11 gear a 15lb Aluminum fly wheel would be sweet. I would like to try one. Only problem with a Aluminum flywheel, is that you need more gear to get moving, and if you miss a gear your motor will go to 8000RPMS in a hurry. The Aluminum flywheel will make your motor recover faster during shifts, plus less rotating mass for a faster time in the 1/4 mile. :)
Re: Which BB flywheel should I get? (1970 Stingray)
I was looking into the aluminum flywheel last year but got talked out of it. A motor likes the extra weight to even out the pulses of the cylinder firing. Regardless I would not use a cast flywheel. Use a billet steel at least. The billet flywheels would be less prone to flying apart. I haven't a clue if the mentioned flywheel is cast or not but aftermarket flywheels in pillet should be close in cost.
