I have a dodge daytona es 1990 and when i kick her hard sometimes the turbo seems to shut down. when i lift off the gas when shifting, the car makes a air release sound. Is the sound normal? A guy told me before that the pop off valve is bad. I guess there is a pressure relief valve? Could this be the problem and if so how much sould i be looking at for the part? :smash:
The air release sound you hear when you let off the throttle is your blow-off valve, that part is normal. It releases the boost so that the pressure doesn't bounce off the closed throttle blade and try to reverse the compressor wheel. As you can imagine, there would be alot of pressure on the turbo shaft and bearing if it were spinning 100,000+rpm and then all of a sudden forced to stop and reverse direction.
As for losing boost while you're pushing it hard, it is possible that either your blowoff valve or wastegate is malfunctioning and releasing boost too early. Besides checking the components themselves, also look for any exhaust leaks and boost leaks, as well as all of the vacuum hoses that reference the wastegate and blowoff valve.
I don't know what your OEM BOV would cost, but most aftermarket BOV's are $250 or less. You could probably find a original replacement for much less in a salvage yard.
