crank storage
I just got a nice forged nitrided crank and won't be doing much with it for about 6 months. I usually just spray sea-doo engine storage spray on journals but wondered what others did.

It's messy but I apply wheel bearing grease to all journals and stand on flywheel-end in a corner of the garage where it will not get bumped. I do not cover with a plastic bag because I do not want the bag to sweat. Deen

I also coat mine with grease, then wrap it in paper towels, pour more oil over it then wrap it in plastic bags. It will last indefinitely wrapped like this. I have stored cams for 20 years like that without any sign of rust.
I lay mine on a shelf but somewhere I read that it is not a good idea to lay cranks down like that.

I saw this question adressed by an engine builder who stored his cranks in 8" pvc pipe cut to length with a cap cemented on one end and the cap just pluged on the other side. He installed the crank, then filled the tube with some cheap generic motor oil such as Walmarts sells, and stored upright . Sounded pretty good

I use motorcycle chain lube (spray can). When ready to use it, just clean thoroughly.
Someone else said "don't put it in a plastic bag... it'll sweat". While that's true, one can combat the unwanted sweating with use of a dessicant (don't put the dessicant directly against the metal - it'll corrode). I've heard (but never tried it) that kitty litter will work.
And don't forget: ALWAYS store the uninstalled crank on end - never lay it flat! That'll help prevent warpage.
