Re: Help.... welding my broken Header ?? (Beach Bum)
It can be welded, just make sure when the guy does it that he scrapes the ceramic coating from where the weld will be(if he's good, he'll know this!). Mig is fine, but if you find someone with a tig it would be better. Have him use either a stainless(yes stainless) rod or if he has it "super missle" rod. I'm don't remember the # for the super missle, but if he knows much about welding, he will have it or could get it. This will be stronger than origional as long as the metal is good! JB WILL NOT LAST! Have it welded, you'll be OK! :D
Re: Help.... welding my broken Header ?? (Beach Bum)
the stainless is a good idea.
I'd tig it and use minimum heat, just a little at a time and let it cool. that way you'll save as much of the coating as possible. don't forget to paint it with something after its fixed, while the stainless won't rust, the edge's of the weld are still plain steel and will be unprotected.
Make sure you clean all the carbon deposits from the inside of the header pipe ( ideally ) as it can be absorbed into the weld and it makes the weld brittle which over time will cause it to crack again. make sure it fits well before and after welding so as not to put it under stress on assy as this will cause it to crack again
Tig is the prefered option as it will be the neatest and look factory fresh
Mig is just as good for this appilcation but cosmetically it is not as good.
Re: Help.... welding my broken Header ?? (Beach Bum)
Hey Beach Bum, I have stumbled onto your post a little too late but I had the same problem with my Jet Hot coated (inside and out) Headman headers. They are equipped with the AIR tubes. While being drop KICKED across the USA by UPS, 4 of the 8 welds around the AIR tubes were cracked badly enough to see daylight through them between the outer edges of the factory welds and the tubes.
I had them TIG welded with stainless steel and it worked out very well. We carefully ground off just enough of the Jet Hot coating to make a clean weld. They are now better than new!
