You don't need to be concerned about oiling, you do not necessarily need oil restrictors, but you do have the option. As you probably know, with a solid roller cam/lifters, the need for oil at the top end is reduced since it is only needed for lubrication and cooling, not for keeping the lifter pumped up. If this is a street engine, I would lean towards the conservative side if you do decide to run restrictors. Most racers with solid cams run a .060" restrictor, but that's pretty small in my opinion if durability is a prime concern, as it usually is on a street engine. I run .125" holes in my restrictors. It probably puts a little more oil than necessary up top, but it's certainly not excessive. It does ensure adequate lubrication, as well as sufficient flow to keep the springs cool. I have also had good results with .090" restrictors, but I'd rather be safe than sorry with this motor.
If your valve covers have valve spring oilers, then .060" is probably fine on the street since the springs are getting their own dedicated supply of oil. My covers have oilers but I don't use them. You really only need them for endurance reasons, circle track, etc with steady high-rpms with high valve lifts.
Buy your solid roller lifters and read the directions!:) Crane Pro's tell you not to run any restrictors. I already installed the motor with restrictors when I came across that tid bit of info. I used the large r hole restrictors. I don't know which. but probably in the .125 range. I'm just using the normal melling pump - Taken apart and polished out with one thin spring shim. the pressure is nearly 80 psi when the motor is cold
I like the nice high oil pressure that comes from installing restrictors. With 10w-30 and 200 degrees water temp I still have 65 - 70 pounds cruising down the freeway.
i personally do not think you need the restictors unless this is a all out race motor i say flood the top end with oil just like stock and those solid lifters on the street will last imo
I installed my own. It's best to have the motor out on a stand. On the back of the block above the crank shaft. You should have allen plugs probably gooped inplace. Just remove them and install your oil restrictor. Just go with a larger size.
:) That cam ought to do it! Are those lifts with 1.5 and your installing 1.6?
Yes sir! I need to double check my piston/valve clearance though, but I plan on installing 1.6's. However I seem to recall being able to clear .650'ish with my current setup.
Anyone have any thoughts on using 1.5's and 1.6's for my roller rockers?
