Might be old news, but Comp is now offering a composite distributor gear. for those of us who run billet roller cams requiring the use of a bronze distributor gear, this seems to be a worthwhile option. I just got mine today, so I can't attest to it personally yet, but Comp claims they've seen much better longevity from them over the bronze gears. I was going through a broanze gear about every 5000 miles, they are claiming to have seen over 20,000 miles and still going. It costs a little more, $90, than the bronze gears, 430, but if it lasts that much longer it should be worth it in the long run. I also feel a little better about plastic particles flowing through my engine over bronze particles.
Comp's part number is 12140 if you are interested.
It's not old news to me. Thanks Monty! Sounds like just the thing I need for the '79 I'm buying next week (it has a solid roller 406 in it). I wasn't looking forward to the bronze gear hassles.
I ran bronze gears for years changing it about every 2 years. The last time I emailed Comp Cams with my roller cam part number and they told me I didn't need a bronze gear and that the stock steel gear would work with my roller cam. I ran it last season like this but haven't pulled it yet to check wear.
Most roller cams from Comp do not require a bronze distributor gear, as Comp uses a roller cam core featuring a pressed on cast iron cam gear. Unfortunately for me, no cam company that I am aware of offers a cam core with the cast iron gear for BBC sized bearing journal small block cams. They are all billet and have a steel gear.
