Default Help wanted with engine rebuild.

I bought a engine from the wreckers on Friday and would like some advise from you guys. First here are my #'s.

block - 390010, 4 bolt
VIN - V0913TYZ
heads - 462624
heads I already have that are done (3 angle value job) - 333882
Crank - 3932442
factory alunimum intake
stock carb.
going to run stock exhaust manifords

1. Are the 82's OK to use, I'm not pumping out 400hp.
2. Recommendations on exhaust. I'm going with stock manifolds and duels with cats.
3. Cam recommendations

Any help would help since this is the first time I have done this in 20 years. Thanks....

The 0010 blocks were common in HD & truck applications. I'm not sure of the vin# on the block, but the best blocks can be identified by a cast in #"10" or a "20" or both numbers under the timing cover. If there is a 10/20, the block has 10% tin & 20% nickel. If it's just 1 number, it's the percentage of nickel with no added tin. I believe the nickel is for wear resistance & the tin is for corrision - not sure.
Heads - not sure of the #'s
Crank - cast is ok to 400 hp
Cam - depends if you are required to get smog checks. If you plan on keeping the cats you don't want too much overlap. Unburned fuel vapor will end up burning inside the converters which will kill them & also make them red hot.
If you want to use stock exhaust Rams horns the best ones to get have 2.5" outlets, but are hard to find.

'624s are 80's smog heads.
'882s are late 70's smog heads - terrible by many people's standards.

What are you going to use the block for?
C3ers like the CC268 or xe262 depending on what tranny, etc.

For about the same $$ as you will send on the stock heads you can buy a set of the World Products S/R Torquer iron heads. If the engine will be stock or just a little warmer, go with the smaller 170cc port version.

Here are some at a reasonable price.

Even with stock exhaust manifolds, I beleive the heads will help, just use a high flow exhaust system.

Once you figure out just what you want to do with the engine, call Ultradyne cams and buy one of their hyd roller cams, these guys have forgotten more about cams than I'll ever learn.

Where ever you buy the cam, don't try to outsmart them, just tell them what you want to do and use their recommendation. Too many engines, especially street engines, have been disppointing because some wanna be racer insisted on the bigger cam to make max HP at 9,000 RPM.
