Re: Just bought some Carrillo rods !!!! (SmokedTires)
Mike - I just can't see spending more to make a less powerful motor. Any 3.75 - 4.25 bottom end can be built to do 8000 rpm. The valve train is the real problem.
I have nothing but praise for Crower & Comp Cams steel Rockers. They clear my big retainers Your big Iskey's -the .875 Isky severe duty roller rockers are more designed for 1.660 dia, springs with massive pressures.
If you really want reliable high rpm. 4 valve heads are where your money should be spent.
Gkull, I agree with you. Like some others have stated though, I may need to get a custom made crank if I want to go to a stroke larger than the Nascar 3.330 stroke. If I have to spend $2000 for a custom crank, then I'll probably sell the rods. Otherwise it looks like I'll be around a 360ci.
This isn't all bad though. With the larger 4.155 bore I'll unshroud the valves more. I would think this is good for airflow should I supercharge down the road ;) .
I still have much saving to do, so I can research it more both here on the forum & elsewhere :) .
Re: Just bought some Carrillo rods !!!! (SmokedTires)
When you start getting into the real short strokes and high rpm. Gas mileage really sucks and glowing ehaust pipes are the norm from raw unburned fuel still on fire when the exhaust valve opens. Ever wonder why some NASCAR cars shoot fire out the pipes when they back off at a turn. Those are the higher reving shorter strokes and mileage suffers.
Valve shrouding is thought up by the guys who can't afford 2.200 intake valve heads on a small block. I say to them just keep your low hp and 20 year old ideas.
There will always be valve shrouding an it occurs in 2 areas. Chember wall & the cylinder wall. Cylinder wall shrouding can't be changed (except you can bore to a larger bore), the only shrouding you can really work on is the chamber shrouding. The larger the valve the more shrouding it has, it needs a larger chamber spacing around the valve for the charge to swirl past the valve face. The larger the valve the closer the edge comes to the chamber wall & the block causing more shrouding.
Shoruding is so important because the highest charge velocity occurs in the long side radius, which is the outside top edge of the intake runner (the side that exits into the wall side of the valve, the small radius exits to the chamber center side of the seat)
The benefit of 4 valve heads is that they have less shoruding because of the smaller valves but the combined valve surface is bigger than that of 2 valve heads.
Re: Just bought some Carrillo rods !!!! (Twin_Turbo)
Well gang I just purchased a Sonny Bryant crank today. It's a 3.625 stroke with 2" rod journals. This should give me about a 393sbc with the 400 bored .030, I'm not sure if I'll need to go that far or not yet.
I will need to get custom pistons made. Ross can make them custom so it looks like that's where I'll be shopping for those :) .
George have you seen the new Jegs aluminum 220 heads? What's your opinion on them?
Re: Just bought some Carrillo rods !!!! (SmokedTires)
Mike they sound pretty good. Can you find out what intake and exhaust gasket size is required? Do they make any CFM claims? The spring pressure is high, but you can solve that with some titanium retainers that change the installed height to near 2 inch. For the near $1400 I would also look at Dart 227 and what AFR has for that amount.
220cc Intake runners
.150'' Offset intake rocker req'd (P/N 270-11765L&R 1.5 ratio, 270-11766L&R 1.6 ratio)
1.550'' Springs - 1.875'' Installed height, 240 lbs. seat pressure, .680'' Maximum lift
64cc CNC machined combustion chambers with angle plug design
10° locks, steel retainers and bronze guides
2.100'' Intake and 1.600'' exhaust stainless steel valves
7/16'' Rocker studs and 5/16'' guide plates included
