I have a std/std forged 1178 302 crank. Must've been a very early take out due to a bearing issue on #6 rod journal only. Mains are dead on 2.45" and rods are dead on 2.10", except for #6. The smallest reading I get on that one is 2.090" and will probably take another. 010"+ to clean up. I don't want to cut the rest of the crank to match 1 smaller journal. (The rest will polish ok.) Can a reputable shop weld this up and turn it down to standard again? Will the repair exceed the value of the crank? I'll most likely have to ship it, so that will be an added expense also. Any suggestions?
TIA,
Dave.
Dont know on pricing....I think money aside Id just want a new one. Todays metal is so much better.
A cast steel Scat is supposedly stronger than a GM forged. For a real 302 Id get the best pieces you could
I could be wrong..but originality doesnt mean a thing if reliability is compromised noone would know.
Yes it can be done but it would be very expensive to weld and than grind. it would still be a repaired crank.
Best of luck
The problem with welding or plating a crankshaft to repair it is ALL cranks flex to a certain degree. Eventually, the plating or weld fatigues, and cracks. Very few cases I've ever heard of that have been successful for long term street use. For a race car, it makes more sense, but most will still fail at some point.....
