Default Removing an Exhaust Pipe Stud

Corvette brothers and sisters;
I have a stripped exhaust stud on my stock header exhaust where it connects to the Y pipe on an 86. I've been told in order to replace the the stud I would have to pull the header and alternator and other things and do it on a bench. I was hoping that someone would know of a way without pulling the header. I can get a straight access to the back of the stud where it screws into the header. I'm able to get a long set of bent nose pliers on the center of the stud but it won't budge. Thoughts?
Thanks
Bobby

If you have access to a oxi acetylene torch and know how to use it. You could try to heat ear on manifold until cherry red and then try to you vise grips to turn stud. If you are unsuccessful you need to take manifold off.

Default Stud removal

Bobby,
Ive got an 87 C4
my broken stud was on drivers side
I did this today
my stud is threaded into the header
a jackhammer may remove it- but other than ur burning daylight 😂
here’s what I did

Remove 6 ea 14 mm header mount bolts- 20 mts max
the front four r socket, 2-3 “ extension wobbly n 14 mm
rear two- box end long one preferably

ps don’t even touch generator

disconnect wires at distributor
i even left plugs connected in head
rotate fwd edge of header up n out- done
i clamped mine on egr tube- my egr is toast
dont smoke it n u won’t damage anything
Clamp only tight enough to stabilize header- use a rag

if U can weld n torch have at it- should look almost like stock- on drivers side from on top u can only see one stud head I believe anyway

i believe my bits r titanium, they’re blue from Lowe’s
Bore it out- wear goggles
installed a bolt with a stainless shallow dome circular head n square locking device under it- then the bolt shank

its not stock but it’s way more functional
do all three on header n forget about it for another 30 years
the right side is more time consuming- many more obstacles
if ur a good worker n doing just one on drivers side- with parts in hand
2 hours ish- done

Default Stud removal

On mount bolt shank for stud
use antisleaze , it’s silver, has application acid brush
On all hot section bolt shanks- it facilitates removal without destroying the pieces parts
its cheap, just lightly cover threads- ull thank me l8r😎🇺🇸
Thats how we disassemble jet engine turbine cases without a torch👍
500 deg approximately Celsius

Default Header removal

Bobby
i forgot
b4 u remove header
i believe it’s called the egr tube/ it’s stainless n circular that’s attached horizontally to top of header

by the gen there’s a short section of tubing with 2 clamps that u need to remove that connects to this metal egr tube
i used antisleaze on fitting stem to facilitate installation n removal

I just had 5 broken exhaust studs removed today, took the manifolds to a machine shop and he heated them up and got them out, its most likely the only way.

Any quality muffler shop can usually remove those without issue.
