I'm hoping to do a cam swap soon but have one big question- Can I install the cam without pulling the engine??? I'm hoping that once I clear a path there'll be enough room to stab it in through the front. Has anybody done it like this? Thanks.
Les:
Yes you can install the cam without removing the engine. You will however need to remove the radiator. Once the radiator is removed all there is to do is remove the balancer, timing cover etc... and you can push the bumpstick right in.
NOTE: You will find it much easier to remove everything with the hood removed.
Just out of curiousity, what cam have you decided upon?
bence,
Thanks, that's good news....and yes, unfortunately I'm very familiar w/ radiator(w/ attached trans cooler) & hood removal- not fun but alot better than yanking the motor.
I found a cam I really like by Ultradyne- flat tappet solid lifter called the 276/284 in their BB Chevy section. Stats are- .586/.600 lift & 243/251 duration @ .050. It looks like a fairly serious power maker w/ good enough manners to work very well w/ my combo. The owner, Harold Brookshire, spent 20-30 minutes on the phone w/ me- very nice & helpful guy. He says the cam is very deceptive because it has an idle that, while noticable, doesn't tip off the kind of power the cam makes mid & top end.
Now I need to do a valve drop to check for valve/piston clearance- if that's good I'll freshen up the heads , stab the cam in, & see what I've ended up with. Thanks again for the info.

Re: BB cam install help (Les)
I have also done it without removing the engine, just as Shane described. This time I am pulling the motor becasue I am putting a scattershield on also. That is a pretty seriuos cam, should make some good power. Harold is very knowledgable. I was thinking of using one of his cams untill I found a good deal on the one I am going to install.
RATT,
Thanks, it's good to hear some confirmation- not that I didn't believe you bence ;) Yes, Harold sounds like he really knows his cams & is very much into performance cars in general. Just out of curiosity, what cam did you choose? I'm sure your combo is a bit more serious than mine.

Re: BB cam install help (Les)
I am going with a pretty serious upgrade. I had the heads ported, went with a Victor Jr. and a bigger solid roller. The cam is 255 262 at .050 .651 lift on a 112 lobe center. I am hoping the 112 will melow things out enough to still operate my power brakes. Although it will cost me a little power naturally asperated, I think it will trap more NOS when I use it, and make more power than a tighter lobe seperation would have.
I am hoping to make at least 500 rwhp with full exhaust and 150 to 175 more with the Fogger. I will post the results when I am done.
Yes you can change the cam while the engine is still in the car; but, I think you need a 9/16ths socket to remove some of the brackets! :D I see another dyno day forming up this summer.
Hahahaha, it's funny Chuck- just last night my wife was saying what a nice guy you are....I assured her that she wouldn't say that if she really knew you. ;) So, did you or did you not get your 9/16" back??????? I have the pic to prove it mister!
Yea, I'm finally gonna throw some $$$ into the motor. I'm also gonna send the headers out to Jet Hot while the heads are off. But no dyno day til I get a good shifter installed- I think you know what I'm talkin about
And I'll only run my car if you leave both of your Vettes home that day- I'm not into humiliation! Just bring your full set of tools :D
RATT,
Yea, I figured it was gonna be pretty nasty. I think I saw the heads you're using in another post but I can't remember what they are...old age & the memory thing, you know. I'll bet you reach your goals. Good luck.
Yes, you did finally return the 9/16ths socket after repeated threats, pleadings, and ultimatums. I had actually given up. Never expected to see my precious heirloom again. You caught me off guard when I simply said "please" and you handed it right over!
Anyway, I thought your shifter was ok, at least from the **** down. Wasn't it the "rag" joint that caused the problem?

It was the letter from your attorney that finally did it...All that for a socket w/ nothing but Chinese symbols on it?!?!?!?! Some people!
As for the "rag" joint comment- I'm beginning to see why The Dep would have issues with you! ;)
Doing the lower hose was never any fun....Good Cam Choice Les
:D
Larry
Larry,
I can confirm that about the hose- been there a coupla times now. What's more- that lower hose has to come off everytime I want to drain the radiator anyway. The only negative aspect of the Griffin aluminum I'm running is that there's not enough room to open the petcock valve w/ the radiator in place. Overall it's well worth it for the difference in cooling but it's still a pain.
As for the cam- I sure hope you're right. I'm getting anxious to find out!
