Ordered a set of TRW forged pistons from the local speed shop, part number TRW L2256F. Got'em in but they LOOK like they are CAST!!! Inside the piston it looks like a "sand" grain (where there is no machining). They are stamped "L2256F". This IS a forged TRW part number, but they don't look forged. Is there some NEW process for creating forged pistons???? ANY input appreciated. :banghead:
Forged pistons look like you took a lump of doe and punched it with a fist. The lines on the inside look like they flow. Maybe it is only a new finishing process like glass beading to clean them up. Look for cast lines. The inside would show some parting lines if it was cast.
Re: HELP! Are these forged pistons? (clem zahrobsky)
Any chance they might be stamped with the wrong part number? Anyone ever heard of this happening? I mean the plant that produces forged slugs won't be making cast ones too? I'm just concerned that they might be erroneously stamped. I'm going to be running 10psi....
If they are cast, you will be able to see a plate that is cast in the piston on the wrist pin bosses. This is a necessity for a cast piston to have support around the wrist pin. Also cast pistons have slots behind the oil rings.

I never noticed that plate before. Does anybody have a pic of that? Also, Why are those "SLOTS" only proper for cast pistons? Isn't that a lube issue?
