Default Alternative to Solid Roller Lifters?

I am very intriqued with his Roller X lifter design. The cost for Schubeck's Roller X lifters, plus sending to him for machining and installation is about $1200-1300. The thought of having a solid roller lifter fail, or tearing the engine open every year or so (~10,000 miles) to replace them is not very appealing either. At only 39 grams compared to 105 grams for my new Crane Pro roller lifters, the lighter spring pressure I could probably run sounds good too. At the very least I would have much less fear of floating the valve train.

I will be pulling my motor to install the new roller cam and other goodies. This would be the time to do it. Your thoughts, opinions, suggestions and even chastisements would be valued.

Thanks,

Chuck

Chuck,
I wish I had some info for you but I don't. However, there's a Chevelle(man am I tired- that doesn't even look like it's spelled right. No more crack for me!) forum that has alot of hardcore gearheads & racers that might be able to help you. I think it's just called chevelle.com but due to computer problems today all of my bookmarks have been lost. Good luck bud.

Chuck:

I posted the same questions on the engine mod site and the Chevelle site a month ago or so. I did a little research into the Schubecks and from what I learned I liked them. I really like the idea of not having a solid roller come apart and ruin the motor. The lower spring pressure also was appealing. Now for the draw backs, cost. From what I understand you have to send your block back to Scubeck for them to do the work on it required to run the special 1 in. diameter lifter and his cam designed to work with those lifters. From what I have heard Schubeck requires he do all the work to your block otherwise he will not sell you the lifters and cam, I could be wrong.

If I had my motor down to the block and the extra money to do it I would try the Schubecks, you could be the first Chuck. I would imagine you could run a very high lift cam without the normal worries of a high lift street roller.

Les, 69Nox,

Thanks for the Chevelle.com lead guys. Nox, the "Radius lifter" Schubeck sells needs a specially ground cam because the bottom of the lifter is the equal of a 2" wheel. The "Roller X" lifter is supposed to work perfectly with any roller cam giving the same lift and duration that the cam's manufacturer intended. The $1200-1300 cost I spoke of includes his machining and shipping the block both ways. The lifters themselves are $820.

I already have the Crane lifters, still new in the box. Maybe Summit would allow me to exchange them for something else they have that I can't live without.

One of my small fears is that if anything happens to the Schubeck
Company and one of his lifters break, I would probably be screwed in finding any other lifter setup that would work in my machined lifter bore block. I would need to find a new block. Not horrible in that it is not an original block, but a pain in any event. Yet if one did fail, I would probably need a new block anyway! Does his design and reputation suggest that it should last 100,000+ miles?

Chuck

Chuck,

I have done a little research on the Schubeck as well but have not found anyone that is using them. They sound like a killer deal, but you bring up some interesting points.

I don't want to invest in his system without hearing from some people that are actually using them - sounds like you feel the same way.

I will keep searching. If you decide to take the plunge, please let us all know.

Steve

So for you 1200-1300 you'll have your lifters and block ready? I thought they were gonna sell the cams and lifters in matched sets? Is it possible to get the machine work done somewhere else cheaper? Sounds like he trying to have his own little monopoly on every aspect of running these lifters.

It looks kind of like the Jesel Keyway lifters that eliminate the tiebar & hardware (but use the std roller) See pic:

unless you are turning more than 7000 rpm i would use hyd roller lifters. i have run several computer dyno programs solid roller vs hyd roller and found less than 10 hp difference and the life of the hyd roller lifter vs the solid i find that unless it is a full race engine the hyd rollers are the way to go. i work on 2 different blower 510 inch engine boats, one has a solid roller cam and the other has a hyd roller cam and they both run the same speed checked with a GPS :chevy
