I am putting a 67' 427 390 HP engine back together and considering an aftermarket cam. All other components are stock. I understand that a street hyd roller will give me about 20 extra HP. Since I need to buy a whole new valve train anyway, I was considering springing for the Hyd Roller. Is any one using a Hyd Roller in a Gen IV BB? Is +20 HP a reasonable expectation? Is there any special machining I must do on the block to install an aftermarket Hyd Roller? Any recommendations on which one to use? 67' vette with 4 speed and 3:73 rear end, driven for fun on weekends with an occaisional trip to the 1/4 mile.
I think that you will be able to use a retrofit style hydraulic roller lifter, like these http://www.compcams.com/catalog/258.html part 854-16. The retrofit lifters seem to use a tie-bar inplace of the valley spider for retaining the lifters. It doesn't look like any special machining is required.
You will also need a cam button of some sort to control forward movement of the cam, this also requires a stout front cover or a water pump with a reinforcement that places pressure on the front cover.
What are you looking for in a cam? What other "mods" are you making to the engine (porting, intake, etc.)?
IIRC, the billets used for hydraulic rollers are different from standard cams, and normally require a change of gear on the distributor. Just another detail to keep in mind...
I'm running a solid roller from comp cam and have no problems with their lifters after 5 plus years. The hydraulic's are the same only internally different. As for the distributor gear after going through a few bronze ones I talked to comp cam and found out the stock steel gear is fine. I have been running the stock gear for 2 year now.
