Hey, I bought my 505 from Kahuner about 8 months ago. It is externally balanced and had a standard flywheel.
I have added a ton of parts and but did not mess with the block with pistons crank and rods. I am hooking it up to a turbo 400 and I just got my CSI weighted flexplate. It has a sticker on it that says to balance the engine with the flexplate.
The engine is all assembled and ready to be installed. It has a Hydraulic roller cam. Do I need to take it to a machine shop to be balanced?
I have the balancer (stock) that I bought it with. What are my options?
If I do have it balanced should I buy a aftermarket balancer/fluid damper?
How much does balancing cost?
I have about 10 grand invested in the engine and I want it to be set up right the first time.
Thanks!
You mean by "std. Flywheel" it had one for a clutch right? If it's externally balanced and the old stick shift flywheel has the balance weight pad cast into it, just install a regular 454 externally balanced flexplate with the weight welded on it.
To balance it, you need to disassemble engine completely.
I doubt they messed with flywheel when they balanced it and I would guess it is stock. But look around it anyway for any "fresh" drill holes in it. Should be some factory ones maybe, but all the other work should have been done on crank itself. If that new flexplate is setup for a regular 454 balance then it should work fine with no issue.
I was involved with Kahuner a good bit when he was putting that dude together. We talked a lot when he was planning it. You're going to have a handful there with your upgrades!
I went from a automatic to a standard. The motor was balanced with the 454 offset weight ring gear and they added a rivit to the the flex plate to bring the motor into balance. When I went to the standard I used the 454 flywheel put sent it and the old balanced flex plate to the balancers and they made the new flywheel offset to the exact same as the flex plate.
