I need opinions. I have a built 700R4 for my 89 with a 475-500hp 383 maxing out at around 6000rpm. I know my 700R4 might not live long behind this motor but it's what I have for now. I have a Art Carr 10" non-lock-up convertor and I'm thinking of going to a lock-up convertor or maybe using a TH400 like I did on another C4 project. If I use a TH400 I'd have to keep the 2.73's in the rear because I will be driving on the highway often, with the 700R4 I'd install 3.54-3.73's to give me around 120mph@6000rpm @ the traps. Anyway, does anyone out there have a 700R4 that's lived behind this kind of power and how long has it lasted? lock-up worth anything? Or should I go TH400 and not worry about a trans and worry about the D36?
I have a 700R4, that the builder says, should be good for 700+ HP. I am using a Vigilanti 2600 rpm stall lock-up converter in front of it. So far it has only been abused by a Crossfire. The old trans was shot, and I have more HP sitting on an engine stand. I race every week and of course it's holding up fine. They had to "de-tune" it so I could live with it until the HP transplant. *I* think this is the best way to go for a dual purpose vehicle. More stall will be needed with the new engine. Good luck, and...
If you want a better O/D tranny consider the 2004r. It can be built to handle that kind of power. Its a better trans then the 700. Its lighter and robs less power and has a better grear spread. All 200's have full throttle 3rd 4th ushift and hold in 4th. The turbo buick guys have brought the 200 a long way over the years. my bros turbo T has 500+hp and the 200 hold up good. Plenty of billit internals available for it. Check out the trans talk section on the http://www.turbobuick.com. Those guys have the mose expierence with the 200.
if you want to go TH400 talk to me. I have the original one from my 73. Its ready to go as is and works great, but you would likely want to tear into it anyway.
