Will a ZZ4 bolt up ......
In place of the run of the mill 350. I have a 69-70 vintage block in my car. There is also a 85 vintage block in the wifes camaro. I have a 3970010 block I got with the Camaro. I was thinking of cleaning out the garage and shed of spare Camaro parts. Assuming that if either car lost an engine I'd just put a crate motor in. What I want to make sure of is that a ZZ type motor will hook up to our current headers, motor mounts, etc..... I know I might have a problem with hood clearance in a replacment situation for my car because of the vortec heads, although I think you can get a performer manifold which is what I have now. Don't think the RPM will fit and give me enough room from carb throat to top ao air cleaner. Probably just a little more that an inch at the front of the choke tower now  Thanks I was looking to get 500$ for complete Camaro drive train water pump to rear. Hood and rallys.

Just a few minor differences between old two-piece rear seal motors and the new one-piece rear oil seal types. The newer one-piece seal motors are externally balanced. And therefore need a different harmonic dampener (larger) and a different flywhell/flexplate – as it bolts up to a different style crank end. Also the L98 (and Vortec) heads do not have an exhaust crossover passage for EGR smog requirements – though I have seen a fancy plumbing retrofit. Now we are talking the one-piece rear seal type blocks. For the motors with the iron vortec heads you will need a vortec style intake. But the L98 aluminum corvette heads on the ZZ4 motors use the old style intake and your intake should work just fine.
Internally the newer one-piece rear seal blocks are cast and machined for the stock OEM hyd. roller cams (but my guess is the flat tappets would work in them if needed).
Chevy will still sell you a brand new low compression motor with the old two piece real oil seal called the LM1 (it’s what I found in my car). And everything will bolt up just fine and I can’t imagine any smog issues here. Just was a real dog in my car. If you’re going to 5,000 rpm plan to pack a lunch. Last prices I saw was about $1,400. :chevy
