Can someone run this on a desktop dyno please. ZZ4 short block, Edelbrock Performer 64cc heads (aluminum),ZZ4 aluminum intake,,Gm HEI distributor,Edelbrock Q-Jet carb 795cfm,Comp Cams roller cam lift .472 i /.480 e duration @ .50 200 i / 206 e, 227/170 flow, Crane Gold roller rockers. Thanks alot ! :seeya
I may be able to help if you can provide the following:
- Compression ratio
- Hydraulic or solid lifter roller cam?
- Cam angle for intake valve open? Intake valve closed? Exhaust valve open? Exhaust valve closed?
- Cam advance or retard angle?
- Type exhaust (e.g., stock, headers, etc.)
A stk ZZ4 is rated @ 345 HP and 405 TQ. I don't think your combo is any stronger! What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want more HP/TQ? Are there budget issues? Why not get a complete ZZ4 crate engine?

The engine specs I have listed are for a engine build that Tom Sallee of Sallee Chevrolet in Oregon will build for me. What he will accomplish is a completely smog legal engine with all smog equipment in place that will satisfy the smog ***** here in Arizona. The engine will equal or excede the power/torque of a ZZ4 crate engine according to him. I wanted a second opinion from others who had access to a desk top dyno. The only thing that would not be stock emissions will be the addition of AIR headers with dual cats and true dual exhaust. :seeya
Now I understand. We have smog ***** in Ca. Can you use the newer ZZ4 block? I had the engine in my 74 rebuilt to updated specs. I used 50 state alm heads and Hyd Rol. I could easily pass smog w/few changes. To get more lift w/small cam, think about 1.6 rollers. Some porting and backcutting the valves is good for extra flow at all lifts. This should get you at least as much as a ZZ4. The smog intake will hold you back on top end. Hope this helps.

 What do you mean by "newer ZZ4 block" ?

The ZZ4 is "Newer" the the orignal block that came in a C3. In Ca you can use any "replacement" block that was available in that year. I could have used a 400 block, but not a ZZ4. I have no idea about the law in Az. That's why I had to use the old style block w/Hyd Rol. You should be very happy w/engine. Be careful not to overcam/overcarb!
I have never heard (here in Arizona) of any emissions center checking the block. The requirements here are the vehicle must be equipted with the factory emissions devices. The 81 as you know had a single cat but I will go to dual cats and true dual exhaust despit the law. Another forum member here (BSeery) has that exhaust setup with a crate ZZ4 and seems to get away with it and pass emissions,he also lives in Arizona.
Here in Ca the Smog Gestapo have a "visual" inspection that must be passed. Unless the car came w/duals, you have to stay w/single cat/exhaust. My 74 is no longer inspected or tested! On a mod engine the RPM intake is a big improvement over preformer "smog" intake.

That combo will not make more the 345. The compression will be lower with the other heads, the ZZ4 is rated with a free flowing exhaust and no emissons equipment.
Why would you not buy the ZZ4 and hook up the EGR that comes on the intake and all your other smog stuff should be able to hook up. Then Leave the clogged up exhaust on? Should be cheaper, and at least you know you can uncap it someday. If you test is a visial inspection, then just gut the cats on some nice 2.5" pipes
