header coatings question

Default header coatings question

I have been asked if I want the silver or black coating on my new headers. I have been told that the black coating is a better idea as it withstands a higher temp. The silver on the other hand removes heat better. The 3d option her is to have the silver done on the interior and the black done on the exterior.

Your silver internal and black exterior sounds logical.

I had a local company just redo mine in silver ceramic paint. External only.

Robin,

You want to keep the heat energy inside the header for best performance. Here is an example of a high-end interior ceramic coating http://www.hpcoatings.com/hipercoat_extreme.htm , but you can use the ceramic paint available to you that is most heat reflective, or least heat conductive on the inside of the header.

I don't know how much this will help, but it is related to coated headers.
I copied this from Swain Tech website that is related to the subject in case others are curious.


Exhaust System
Header Coatings

The theory of insulating the exhaust system to retain heat is commonly overlooked by most racers. After heat has performed its function in the combustion chamber, it travels out the exhaust port to the header. If the Gases are allowed to cool, they lose velocity and the scavenging effect is reduced. If by insulating the exhaust system, gases inside are kept at the highest possible temperature, the resulting effect is a greater exhaust gas velocity and higher efficiency. Each gas pulse moves through the pipe faster, making room for the next and pulling it along. This reduces back pressure and increases the "super-charging" effect created by the now of high velocity gases.
Insulated headers also reduce radiant heat and lower underhood and cockpit temperature. By reducing air intake temperature 10°F, a horsepower increase of 1% results, a 30°F drop equates to a 3% horsepower increase. This is inexpensive horsepower.
Swain Tech engineers have developed several heat management products for use on headers and exhaust systems.

White Lightning Coating

Swain Tech Thermal Barrier Coating, TBC-EX -- TBC-EX is a 3-layer .015-.020" thick permanent coating. The coating is pearl white in color and extremely durable. It reduces radient heat by more than 50%. (It is NOT Hi-Temp paint like other products.)

This is why in addition to having my headers ceramic coated inside and out I wraped them with thermal wrap. Not as pretty as the exposed coated header was but much more effective. :yesnod:
