Hey all--
I have been kicking around the idea of building a 396 LT1 out of my stock 1995 motor. I want a full-out motor with the ability to handle more than a small dose of nitrous (150 or so). I want to spend money where it needs to be spent, but I don't want to buy stuff I don't need. Here is what I was thinking, but feel free to add suggestions:
396, 4-bolt main
Ported LT1 intake and heads
52 mm TB
Cam??? suggestions?
all forged rotating assembly
5.85 rods
I will be mating the motor ultimately to a 6-speed and adding 4.11 or 4.56 gears. I am looking for mid-3 second 0-60 times, and 10's in the 1/4 when on the juice. Any other suggestions? TIA,
10 second quarter won't be easy. There are several LT1's in the 10's on this board, but in C4's. I think your C3 is slightly heavier...so more power required.
Is it going to be streetable? Blower? How much nitrous is your plan?
The LT1 is very similar to the older style small blocks so that is a plus. You may want to start with aftermarket cylinder heads though...

Not sure what you are wanting...
Streetable to a point, but I have seen 396 strokers putting out 500+ HP alone, then add a 150 shot of nitrous, and it is a serious threat. I guess my questions at this point is what parts should I be looking for to assemble the motor? What kind of heads? What cam? Obviously, forged internals, but what else? I don't want to use a blower. I am looking at a 6-speed setup for my car as well as 4.10 or 4.56 gears. The car itself is far from a C3. I have a suspension setup from a 1991 ZR1 due at my house Monday afternoon. This will be going onto a custom tube frame. I suspect my car will weigh the same as or a little less than a stock C4. It won't be as aerodynamic, however, and that might be the problem. Any thoughts?
Not too fimilar with LT1 engines, but if you want to spend money where it counts, get some good flowing heads. Also, the more I read, the more important a high quench design seems for the "ulitmate" engine. Do your homework up front.
