Default Head Intake Port Q's...

Hi all,

I am _still_ speccing out heads and it seems I can never really settle on a definate set. I know what flow I need, but the main problem is finding a head that will match the intake I plan to use (yeah, I know, I work backwards!).

The problem is, the intake has HUGE ports on it, and I'm thinking that any head I buy is going to need some serious porting to match up. The ports are 1.500x2.000 (3 sq. inches  ), which is wider and a bit shorter than most performance heads I've seen so far.

Brodix DOES have one head that has that exact port dimension, the CV SP, but at over 5 grand, I don't think that's an option! Also, it'd be nice if the heads will fit standard intakes, so I don't have to worry about an adapter.

So what to do? This is an interesting dilemma. And out of curiosity, what kind of head did this thing go on originally that had ports like that? It's an old MT FI crossram.

Cheers,

Tony

Those are actually pretty small intake ports. Very simular to ported old performance heads like the double hump 186 casting

Heads with port sizes like that are only in the 180 - 200 cc intake port range

FelPro 1256 gaskets are 1.23 X 1.99 Which is the gasket all the smaller dual plane manifolds use. All that is to get your 1.5 inch width is grind out the head width @1/8 inch on each side. I sold a set of 292 casting heads that were that width and 2.10 tall

Hi guys, late reply, hope everyone had a great holiday!

why are you stuck using that intake? looks, retro, etc.???
A bit of both. I originally wanted to do a Weber cross-ram, but the cost of the carbs plus the fact that they don't really have a high CFM rating killed that idea. Then I considered doing a Hilborn, but then there's the hood issue (didn't want pipes sticking out).

This intake is the best of both worlds...

Those are actually pretty small intake ports.
Are you sure?? Now I'm not quite sure how the numbers convert between intake volume (cc's) and port size, but the cross-sectional area is 3.0 sq. in. This is comparable to the cross-sectional area of some heads which have a 220cc-230cc port volume. That should be more than enough to get me into the 300+cfm range where I need to be.

Very simular to ported old performance heads like the double hump 186 casting
Any flow numbers on a ported set?

So basically I'm going to have to have some porting done somewhere to get anything to match up. Kinda sucks, but I guess that will let me keep my options a bit more open.

Cheers,

Tony

intake is cool  i've never seen one... CFM on the webers isn't a issue you can get them plenty BIG 48mm stock and mod. one at 62mm is
way big now paying for and tuning is a whole post on it's own :banghead:

Comp,

From what I was told, it's an old Mickey Thompson manifold. Would sure love to know more about it!

As for Webers, I would have had to go large, at least 52mm if not bigger, but the cost would have been well into 3G's for the setup! Check out this site for an amazing engine with 58mm DCOE's!

Anyway, now the big task is to pick some heads and then I can start working on the build. Good luck tuning your Weber's! Definately post your experiences when you get it worked out! I love the look of those things!

Cheers,

Tony

Mech FI like your picture isn't a good idea for the street. Some companies will convert them to EFI.

My Dart 227cc flow over 300 cfm intake @.600 lift. The port size is 1.40 X 2.28 So I have to slightly trim FelPro 1206 intake gaskets.

If you have to have that intake. I would have it welded and recontour the intake tracks to fit modern common 23 degree heads with taller narrower ports. Then i would spend the $1500 - $2000 and get a nice programible EFI system

Gkull,

Definately am converting it to EFI. Will probably extend the horns to help with the low-end as well.

I think you may be right tho. It may be easier to have the intake ports redone.

Cheers,

Tony

My heads would fit. You hafta trim a Fel-Pro 1206 a good bit for my heads. They've been professionally ported and have 2.125/1.60 valves. I am thinking about selling my motor.

Oh yeah, the motor went a 10.05 @ 139mph in my car a couple weeks ago spinning like crazy with only 900lbs of bottle pressure.
