An OE style starter for a 168 toothed plate will use the Chevy staggered or offset bolt pattern. Your origional Corvette, 153 toother, took a starter using the inline bolt pattern. Double check that your block has three starter mounting holes. I'm sure it will. Only three hole are required for the two starters, because the two bolt patterns share a hole. If the genuis behind the counter can't grasp your situation, ask for a starter for an application with a TH400 trans. They used the 168 toothed plate. Also, all 400 engines used the 168 toother. I use the 220 foot lbs mini gear reduction starter from ProTorque with my 168 tooth.
I got it from summit Racing for just over $200. It just zings up my motor
