Solid Roller

While I have the motor out and the heads off I was considering switching to a Solid Roller.

Would the Comp XR-286R be a good choice?:

248/254 @ .050
576"I.582"E
110 LS

Does this sound fair?

Also, i'm assuming these lift/duration numbers do not take into account the lash. Would something like the XR292R be better?

Well, the heads are off and it would be fairly easy to go upwards of 11:1 with some milling. As It sits now with new gaskets it would be 10.66:1. Doesn't the .018" lash effect the "effective" duration? There has to be .018" lift just to cover lash. This cam as far as lift goes isn't much more than my Hydraulic roller after lash adjustment.

if you are dead set on that cam i just think it would work better with 11.5 comp for better cylinder filling and cranking psi :cheers:

No, i'm not dead-set on it. Maybe something in the 242/248 range would better. I'm open to suggestions.

I talked to Crane and Comp this morning about a cam recommendation.

Comp recommended the XR280R (242/248 @ .050, .570/.576 110LS)

Crane recommended a custom grind (232/242 @ .050 .545/.570 106LS)

Any thoughts?

If your car is a daily driver I would not use a solid roller. I ran the XR280R in my 454, great street cam. It would be a good cam in your 406.

Do not run the Comp Endurex lifters, terrible in big blocks, not sure in small blocks.

No its not my daily driver. I do drive the hell out of it in the summer though. Although neither of my last 2 motors were ran for more than 3000 miles before being pulled and replaced or "upgraded." So durability is not a huge issue. I plan to run nitrous (100-150hp) this summer and drive at least 8000 miles.

I understand the idle issue with the solids and I would make a point to keep the RPM's up when sitting. Also adjusting the lash wouldn't be a problem for me.

I was going to run the standard vertical locking bar lifters from Crane.
