Default 496 assembly...

I am slowly realizing the potential of building up a 496 from my current 433. Even though I will have a small intake (LS6 factory low-riser, and 2.5" exhaust: free-flowing, mandrell with H pipe), this may work better than the 460 I was thinking of due to my 3.36 gears and M20 gearbox. This will have to be a budget build!

-Scat cast crank ($275 includes shipping), external balance
-Scat or Eagle rods ($230 or $385-I beam vs. H beam). These rods are 6.385, which allows for better options on pistons, right?
-Pistons-not sure yet.

Want to run comp cams AR288 (thanks 427Hotrod!), 10:1 CR, street alum heads (GMPP, Edelbrock, or Racerite Brodix).

You racers may cringe at the cast crank and intake, but it will be 95% street use, no nitrous. Is an H beam rod worth the extra $ at the hp levels I will see? What about the rod length, does the 6.385 give more options on pistons, are there clearance issues with one rod design over another?

Thanks.

PS I do have an L88 hood and may run an RPM Air Gap for a while, but eventually want to be able to run this motor with a factory intake so I can go back to the stock BB hood.

Alright....we're luring you over to the "Dark Side"!!

The cast crank will likely be fine for what you are contemplating. You're wanting to stay in the under 6500 range, but I'm still not sure I wouldn't try to find a small child or something to sell to step up to one of the less expensive forged steel ones.

The H-beams from SCAT are very nice. I haven't messed with the I-beam ones, but they are probably fine for this application. The 6.385 is the way to go and yes it really opens piston choices. I know it costs more again, but I'm just not a fan of Hypereutectics or any other cast pistons for hot rod motors. Sooner or later something will fail. I'll put it this way, if it was a choice between a forged/cast crank..I'd use the cast to get a forged piston. If you get some SRP's or something they are also lighter which helps everything.

The 288 cam is going to be a TQ monster on a motor this size. It may be getting a little small for this many cubes, but from the way you describe what you want, it's still viable. You'll have your hands full when you nail it!

Is this an "old" 427 block or is it a '69+ model that is actually a 454 block? Does it have the rod notches in the bottom of cylinders? If it does everything will clear fine, if it doesn't you'll need to do a little grinding.

Either way, those heads you're getting will like the extra cubes and stroke.

Yes, to the dark side!
The block is a 454 cast is '74, so there shouldn't be too many issues. I will deck the block (zero deck, right?), and start looking for good pistons. 69 NOXRat mentioned L19 rod bolts. I am not sure what that upgrade is. If I get the rods I am looking at, they will have 7/16 ARP wave loks w/12 pt nuts. That is pretty good, I think.

It looks like I am getting ready to spend some money!

if you run that 496 with brodix racerites it will definately fly good luck and start buying stock in your local tire company because you are going to need it
