What year did they start offering them in the pickups? 95 or 96? What about the vans and SUVs? Is there any truth to the rumor that the later castings are better, thicker in some places or something?
Is there any chance that I would be able to get a good long block from the junk yard for a decent price or am I dreaming?
The vortec heads were 1996 and up. Make sure you get 350 heads; you do not want the 305 heads. There probably wouldn't be a noticeable difference between model years and the 062 or 906 castings. If running over .450 lift besure to check your retainer to guide clearance.
FWIW, GM is releasing two new vortec cast iron heads. I do not have the P/Ns handy, but one is 170cc with larger vaves and the other comes in at 200CC.
Geoff, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I've been out of town and haven't checkd-in on the forum. I believe I saw the write-up on the new heads in Corvette Fever in the new products section. However, I just looked and couldn't find the magazine. I would call the guys at Scoggin Dickey and see if they have any information on the new heads. HTH Wes
The July 2004 Corvette Enthusiast has a short write-up on the two new heads on page 71.P/N 25534351 175CC I, 64 CC E ports, 2.00 I and 1.55 E valves. P/N 25534371 has 206 CC I and 77 CC E ports, but doesn't list valve size. The article says the new heads are now available. HTH Wes
Thanks wes, I'll try to get ahold of that magazine to read up on em.
Do you by any change know if the heads will have stonger springs (ones that can handle > .450" lift) so one could avoid the cost/hassle of getting them replaced?
Geoff, I believe the heads have all the mods for the high lift cams already done. I would contact one of the big GM Performance Parts dealers, such as http://www.sdpc2000.com and ask about the heads, availability, specs, cost, etc. Good luck, Wes
