Default Tuning troubles

Anybody out there ever tuned an Edelbrock carb? I pulled plugs and they were white, but I've got a lot of carbon buildup on the tailpipes. What gives? Engine is a 350, just rebuilt, not bored (didn't need it) with a Comp Cams XE262H, a Weiand 8004, full tube headers, 2 1/4 pipes and a Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb. Stumbles on WOT launch, but not when at speed and kicked into WOT. What am I missing? Stock heads and converter, 3.08 rear, timing set at 10 degrees BTDC at idle, curve kit installed with weakest springs for fast advance. Carb set 1 step rich secondaries, 1 step rich power, factory cruise mixture. I mean NO get up and go from a dead stop.

I don't know if this is your problem or not but I'd check the total timing. Depending upon your idle speed, the light springs might be allowing centrifugal advance at idle, which will give you a bogus initial reading. Keep in mind that initial timing specs are for convenience and assume no mods, especially to the advance curve. Unless you never plan to rev it past idle rpm, setting it to total timing is the way to go. Rev the engine until the distributor stops advancing and set timing at 36Âş-38Âş. Many stock distributors don't stop advancing until 4-5k but, with your lighter springs, yours should come in much earlier.
