Compare the cams of same lift from same manufacture.
Sorry if this is preaching but David Vizard describes how to compare in Max Perf sb Chevy (p105). This is only with cams from same manufacture. U need to subtract the vlv lash distance from the vlv lift number of the solid to find a hyd cam with same resulting lift - this is what a comparable hyd cam is.
Good luck Moneypit and post ur experience with the mech cam after having used hyd in same mtr. cardo0

Reason: correction
I just removed an XE 284 from a 10.5-1 355, and installed a comp solid FT cam-242/254@050. Difference was night and day in not just the way it ran, but the way it sounds, too. The XE hydraulic would start pooping out up top, and the solid keeps going! Didn't go bigger in this case, as the XE was a tad too much cam in the first place. The 400 should handle a similar size cam or a little bigger w/decent manners. Just finished my personal motor for the Elky, a 6"rod 358. Went w/a custom Comp grind SR-250/254@050, .660/.670 lift w/1.6Jesels, 110lsa
Ramps are practically inverted, as seat timing is very short. Won't live as long as the flat tappet, but should make some insane pull! Post your results when you're done.

Lifter diameter.
Lets take this to the next step and ask is anyone is running larger dia solids? This increases the opening rate of vlv like a rollers steeper ramps. Next size larger dia is Ford, then AMC, and there's even a mushroom solid lifter (like on my pu trucks Cummings). And the lifter bores are'nt all that straight on the stock block - this can in effect advance or retard the cam. So if ur spending the money to correct the lifter bores (i read it ain't cheap) why not increase the flow area of cam with larger dia lifters? Anyone try this? cardo0

What heads & intake are you using? Also, what's the lobe seperation angle on that CC solid?
