Default Engine Block Storage and Preserve

Is there a good way to store a newly machined bare engine block (iron block - LQ9 6.0L). I might have a good opportunity to pick one up, but would not need to put it inplace for a few months. I was wondering how I could preserve the block from rust (like the deck and cylinders).

THanks

Use a paint brush to apply a coat of motor oil to the critical machined surfaces. Wrap it up in a plastic bag and store it in as dry (low humidity) environment as you can find.

Thanks,

I am thinking of using a heavier weighted oil (10w 30). Is there anything I can do for the coolant passagess or do I just let the rust.

I was thinking you might be able to paint the cooling passages with proper prep, but I'm not sure and wouldn't want to advise something bad. I think you could spray all of your cooling passages with wd40 before oiling down the cylinder walls, etc, and that would probably give your cooling system some protection against rust.

Do what Duke said....

AND store it in your house.... It's a temp & humidity controlled environment.

Dont worry about the cooling passages. A little surface rust, if it forms, will do no harm.

If the bores get even a small amount of rust the rings probably won't seal.
