I LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN WITH A TOTAL OF THREE AUTO PARTS STORES (ONE HALF WAY DECENT, TWO NOT WORTH A DARN). I GET THE SAME STORY AT EACH PLACE. THERE ARE TWO SHADES OF BLUE ENGINE PAINT. ONE SAYS CHEVROLET BLUE AND THE OTHER SAYS GM BLUE. THE CHEVY PAINT SEEMS DARKER THAN THE GM BLUE. THE TROUBLE IS NONE OF THE STORES CATALOGS IDENTIFIES THE DATE RANGE THAT THE COLORS WERE USED. I'M TRYING TO PAINT A 1980 350 CID ENGINE. I SEEM TO REMEMBER (THOUGH NOT CLEARLY ENOUGH) THAT CHEVROLET USED A BLUE PAINT IN THE 50'S AND GM (CORPORATE) WENT TO BLUE FROM 77 THRU EARLY 82, WHEN THEY ALL WENT BLACK. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHICH SHADE IS CORRECT FOR 1980, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
THANKS! BILL
Strike3, I think you have figured out the answer already.
If you say the Chevrolet Blue is darker than the GM Corporate Blue, then Chevrolet Blue is probably the color that was used on the 53 and 54 "Blue Flame" sixes. GM Corporate Blue is what you need for your 80.
If you want to check this answer further, I would telephone OEM Paints' Customer Care Center at 760-747-2100. They have good products and can tell you what you need for your 80.
The 53-54 Corvette only six cylinder "blue" is neither of the above. It is a special "turquoise" tinted blue...not available in spray bombs in the parts store. I don't know the right name, but your car should have the darker blue color....not the light powder blue used in passenger car six bangers. Chuck
