My 69 has the original front bumper, The chrome is good BUT it (the bumper) has a very slight bend about ten inches in from the right corner. Can I take it some where to be straightened without re-chroming it? I do not wnat to replace or re-chrome it if I can avoid it.
SVM, check with a local bumper shop that supplies bumpers to body shops in exchange for the old core. Ideally the shop does its own straighening and chrome plating, but since there are so few chrome bumpers anymore (trucks primarily), that may be easier said that done. See what they say about attempting to straighten the bumper without re-plating. If it is a slight bend, they may be able to do it.
If it were me, and the bend was really annoying me everytime I looked at the front end, I would figure what have I got to lose. If the plating comes off in the attempt, I could still get the bumper replated and be no worse off than I would have been if I had decided to get it replated from the beginning. You will have to decide for yourself if you can live with that outcome.
Chuck..That's what I kind in mind. I'm getting ready to paint the car in a few weeks so while I have everything off is the best time. It's a case of buget at the moment. The bend is just enough to ruin the "clean, crisp" look if you know what I mean.
Take your bumper to a machine/sheet metal shop that has a hydraulic break press. They should be able to reform your bumper. If the damage is deep, you will more than likely get some crackink of the chrome.
