Default cylinder heads

I have a 69 427 390 hp vette 512casting. It does not have original heads on the motor Build date of motor is July 20 69.I have been told the heads may have been 063 or 290 castings. Does anyone know what heads I need to look for

Hi John, I have a question about those head numbers. The owner of the local resto shop I do all the build's for is away and I won't see him for a few weeks. (I can't ask him now)

I have '69 resto here, appears to 100% correct. It has an I-9-9 #512 block with a pair of 290's. Both are the same days, J-25-9.

Where do the "063's" come in?

Thanks Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The intake I have here is a #3947801! I haven't actually seen these parts yet, these are the numbers my son faxed over to me. He's disassembling it now. I'm doing the "paperwork"!

Hi Gary read your reply and that is exactly what I have been hearing that some time in 69 they started using 290 heads. But when. There seems to be E 69 063 heads out there but no F. I have been told that F begins the new year for heads so that would mean they started using 290 heads June 69The only diff. btw the 2 is the spark . The 290 went to the taper or peanut style plug hole, no gasket. You mention the intake I have the same. Chris

Hi Chris, John's going to have explain some of what's here. As I said above, the owner of the resto shop is away for a few weeks, normally I get all the input from him.

The heads I have here are the "large" plugs AND most recently I went through this same scenario but with the counterparts to these 290's, the 291's. Same years but the "square-ports" application. I had a pair of these in here with identical dates, D-13-70, but one had "peanuts", the other had "13/16" long's". I ended up "converting" one head to accept the same plugs. This was on a '70 "402" Nova.

As I type this I'm looking at the dates on my customers heads here and I think J-25-9 casting's would be on a '70 vehicle NOT a '69? Maybe it had to with the "strike" G.M. had about that time! I do remember the '69 Z-28's using about 3 different block casting numbers due to that same "strike".

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I know for certain these 290's like the 291's can be had with BOTH plug configurations. I believe it had to do with the model they were installed on! On his Nova I made them both "long reach" to keep the plugs the same! This was not a resto, more of a "hotrod" but the dates were applicable.
